Canon Powershot S95

I finally got a chance to get my hands on a Canon Powershot S95! After telling my mom again and again that she needed a camera for herself, she finally bought this baby. Just in time for mother’s day. XD
I will be reviewing the Canon Powershot S95 in this post and it will be short but packed with the good stuff.

As usual i’ll start this post with the body shots of the Canon Powershot S95.

Front view is quite excellent, the first time I held it in my hands I can immediately say it’s of good build and good quality, a notch above the Ixus compacts.

Backdoor view. Nothing much to see here.

The LCD is decent in size for a compact. It’s 3.0″ with 461,000 pixels and the preview quality of the image is very impressive.

Batteries and Memory card below, the battery is quite smaller compared to the Ixus 300HS.

Buttons above looks neat, not that scary for camera noobies. The Canon G12 looks too complicated compared to the simple setup of the Canon Powershot S95.

The tiny cutesy flash popped out.
So for the biased point of view, I specially love the manual control rings, the one at the front and a rear dial at the back. It makes life much easier to change settings and the manual controls are customizable!
Another deciding factor was the amazingly wide open apperture of f/2.0 and the back lit sensor(HS System) which I found very impressive on the Canon Ixus 300HS. Finally the last deciding factor why we picked the S95 over the G12 is the COMPACT-ness.
I was surprised with the video capabilities of this compact, it’s quite good for it’s own league. If you think 720p is too little or too low quality, think again. I was awed by the video playback, though the downside here is the audio. What do you expect? It’s a FKING COMPACT! XD
The not so biased facts:
Canon PowerShot S95 – key features:
10MP Digic4 imaging processor.
HS System(Back-light) & f/2.0 lens.
28mm wide, 3.8x zoom lens, Hybrid IS.
Manual Control Ring, manual rear dial control.
Shoots JPEG and RAW.
3.0″ Crystal clear LCD
720p HD video recording.
High Dynamic Range mode
AV, TV, M, C modes.

A sample shot taken with the Canon Powershot S95. 1/25, f/2.0, ISO800.

A sample shot taken with the Canon Powershot S95 on the maximum focal range here. 1/5,f/4.9,ISO1600.

A sample shot taken with the Canon Powershot S95 with flash. 1/60,f/4.9,ISO250
After shooting with the Canon IXUS 300HS for some time, I can really say that the Canon Powershot S95 is “BETTER” on all of it’s features. Well it’s to be expected from a top class compact. Do expect that both cameras do their job. They both take good PICTURES! Photo junkies like me or anyone who just loves to shoot and not care about cameras would appreciate the simplicity and the power of the S95. I do suggest this camera to noobies, hobbyist, and anyone who just wants to take a picture.
